Wister Quartet to perform at MMI on March 23

For the 12th consecutive year, MMI Preparatory School will host the Grammy-nominated Wister Quartet for a public performance at the school on Monday, March 23 at 7:00 P.M. The performance is made possible through the support of Dr. James W. Feussner ’65 in memory of Elizabeth Feussner.

MMI announces summer camps open to area children

MMI Preparatory School is opening its doors to area students who wish to have an educational, yet fun summer experience at the annual MMI Summer Camps planned for June and July. The school has announced the lineup of camps that range from programs such as junior filmmaking, messy arts, electronics, Lego Maniacs, and model airplanes, just to mention a few. Students place in MATHCOUNTS competition

During a regional mathematics competition, a team of students from MMI Preparatory School placed fourth in the team competition out of 14 teams in the region. Two MMI students placed second and tenth, respectively, in the individual competition, and one of those students will go on to states.

MMI FBLA excels in competition

Students from the MMI Preparatory School Chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competed at the Region 16 Leadership Conference held at the Woodlands Resort in Wilkes-Barre December 18, 2014. Of the 59 students who competed, nearly half received special honors for their performance in various business-related competitive events.

United Way of Wyoming Valley contributes to MMI through EITC program

MMI Preparatory School in Freeland recently received a $40,000 contribution from the United Way of Wyoming Valley, presented by Nina C. Dei Tos ’01 MPA, Vice President of Resource Development. These funds will be used for scholarship support for MMI students who reside in the Wyoming Valley and meet the criteria for an Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Scholarship.

MMI to hold Entrance Exam January 31

MMI Preparatory School will offer its Entrance Examination on Saturday, January 31, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The exam is for students who will enter grades six through 11 next year and are considering attending MMI Preparatory School.

MMI Preparatory School sophomore Garrett Kost was chosen as this year’s MMI recipient of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, a nationwide program that recognizes middle level and high school students for volunteer work in their communities.

The theme for this year’s dance was “Night Under the Stars.”

Thomas G. Hood, head of school at MMI Preparatory School, has announced the names of students who achieved Honor Roll status during the Fall 2014 quarter.

Sheen recognized by scholarship program

Claire Sheen, a senior at MMI, has been notified she is a Semifinalist in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sheen is one of the academically talented high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

MMI teacher’s novel earns award

Jennifer Novotney, a teacher at MMI Preparatory School, has received an award for her recently published novel.

Her first novel, Winter in the Soul, won a bronze 2014 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in the young adult category. The contest judges the work of authors, illustrators and publishers of children’s books distributed in North America.

Student named National American Miss Pennsylvania

Jacqueline SnyderJacqueline Snyder, a student at MMI, earned the title of the 2014 National American Miss Pennsylvania at the state pageant held August 10.

She will attend the national pageant in Anaheim, California, at Disneyland during the week of Thanksgiving as Pennsylvania’s representative. During the pageant, she will have the opportunity to win her share of more than half a million dollars in cash and prizes.

Congressman Barletta speaks to MMI students

Congressman Lou Barletta speaks to students at MMI.Congressman Lou Barletta visited MMI on Thursday morning, speaking to an assembly of eighth- to 12th-grade students. He discussed a variety of topics, including his plan to run government like a business to save money. Students were able to submit questions that the congressman answered, sharing his views and information on immigration, law enforcement, unemployment, the economy, local development projects and more.

“The students at MMI Preparatory School in Freeland are quite impressive. After I spoke to them briefly, they were full of insightful and challenging questions. If these young people are any indication, the future of Pennsylvania is in good hands!” Barletta said.

MMI awards inaugural Feussner scholarship

A new scholarship has been established at MMI Preparatory School with the first recipient selected this year.

Feussner ’70 in honor of their parents. The Feussners are the proprietors of Feussner Ford in Freeland.

MMI honors Wall of Fame inductees

MMI Preparatory School honored the new members of its Wall of Fame during the ninth annual Wall of Fame dinner and ceremony held on September 20.

Established in 2006, the MMI Wall of Fame honors alumni in addition to current and past faculty, staff and board members who have distinguished themselves in the areas of athletics, business, sciences, education, government, public service, the arts or humanities. Wall of Fame inductees are selected in the following categories: Athletic Achievement, Community Service, Service to MMI and Professional Achievement.

Members of the Wall of Fame Class of 2014 are Shawn P. Gallagher ’84, inducted in the category of Athletic Achievement; the late Dr. David S. Wagner, inducted in the category of Service to MMI; Dr. George Feussner ’62, inducted in the category of Professional Achievement; Dr. William Koenig ’78, inducted in the category of Professional Achievement; and Dr. Robert J. Lutz ’63, inducted in the category of Professional Achievement. Robert Della Croce ’82, inducted in the category of Athletic Achievement, and Dr. James Feussner ’65, inducted in the category of Professional Achievement, are members of the Class of 2013 and were inducted with this year’s class.

Instructor’s song to be featured on TV show tonight

An instructor at MMI Preparatory School will have his original song used in a television show tonight.

Daniel DeMelfi’s “I Stand For You,” performed by Venessa Vicoso, will be featured in Thursday evening’s episode of Warrior Summit Outdoor. The show features returning soldiers engaging in outdoor activities to alleviate any PTSD symptoms. It airs locally at 9:00 P.M. on WYLN-TV 35, which is seen on Service Electric Cable Channel 7.

DeMelfi is a music instructor and choir and Glee Club director at MMI. He is certified by the American College of Musicians.
