Motivational speakers group Be a Hero, LLC, returned to MMI and gave two presentations to the students about the impact bullying has on our schools, neighborhoods, and individuals.

Lisa Marie Ferry, MMI Dean of Students and art instructor, played an integral role in bringing the program back to MMI. The organization’s unique perspective, action plan for every member of the bullying cycle, and unmatched ignition to make change puts Sweethearts and Heroes at the top of the list when it comes to changing schools’ climates.

SweetheartsHeroes1MMI Acting Head of School William A. Shergalis, Ph.D. ’58 said, “We are excited to bring Sweethearts and Heroes back to our school. The messages of hope and the lessons against bullying are so vitally important for continuing to foster a strong bond between our students and aid in our desire to build a culture of strong character and respect for one another. The energy and excitement the Sweethearts and Heroes team brings with them keeps the students engaged and makes a lasting impression.”

During the presentation, Tom Murphy and Rick Yarosh provided an energetic and interactive discussion focusing on the bystanders and empowering them to make a difference. The crux of the Sweethearts and Heroes presentation was five specific “Bully Buttons” that combine to form a call to action against bullying. Yarosh, a retired sergeant with the U.S. Army who was burned over most of his body during conflict in Iraq, served as the “H.O.P.E.” expert and gave a message about overcoming adversity and urning a negative situation into a positive one.

SweetheartsHeroes2The Be a Hero group delivers messages of bystander empowerment, empathy, and leadership to all audiences, including K-12 students, colleges and universities, teaching professionals, and corporations. Sweethearts and Heroes helps children, teachers, parents, and all members of society learn that we all have the potential to be someone’s Sweetheart and the power to be a Hero.
