The Board of Directors of MMI Preparatory School has announced the appointment of MMI President Emeritus William A. Shergalis, Ph.D as Acting Head of School, effective immediately, to succeed D. Scott Wiggins, who over the holidays stepped down for personal reasons.
A long-time member of the MMI community, Dr. Shergalis is an alumnus of the school and served as President (Head of School) from 2001 to 2008, after serving as Chairman of the Board from 1996 to 2000. In 2008, he was named President Emeritus of MMI and was inducted into the MMI Wall of Fame in honor of his service to the school.
Dr. Shergalis is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, received his masters degree in chemistry from Drexel University, and holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Temple University.
An experienced teacher and administrator, Dr. Shergalis has spent more than twenty years in educational leadership at the collegiate level, including ten years as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. Most recently, he was an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at King’s, stepping down from that post in December 2018.
“Dr. Shergalis is a highly accomplished educator and has been an engaged supporter of MMI Preparatory School for virtually his entire life,” MMI Board Chairman John H. Hersker said. “We are fortunate to have this dedicated and proven leader at the helm.”
Dr. Shergalis assumes the post of Acting Head of School immediately and will serve through the balance of the 2018-19 school year.
MMI also has launched a search for a new Head of School to begin at the start of the 2019-20 school year. The Board has formed a search committee comprised of current board members Llewellyn F. Dryfoos III ’82, John H. Hersker ’76, Theresa Long, Stanley B. Warner III ’92, and former board member William F. Loftus ’62.
Hersker added, “With a dedicated faculty and staff under the experienced leadership of Dr. Shergalis, we are confident that MMI is in good hands and we look forward to a great spring semester.”
