MMI Preparatory School junior Dana Carrato, the daughter of Dr. Anthony and Carmine Carrato of Hazleton, has been selected to attend the 2016 Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences (PGSAS) at Penn State University.

The PGSAS program, which provides students with an expansive overview of the diverse fields of agricultural science and natural resources, will be held from July 10 to August 5 at Penn State’s University Park campus in State College.

This competitive admissions program is open to academically talented and gifted rising high school seniors from throughout Pennsylvania. The first three weeks of the four-week experience will focus on the eight core courses and their two-hour laboratory and classroom instruction. Classes will also feature an all-day industry or production-based tour related to the week’s courses.

During the fourth week, students will participate in a team-based service learning activity that applies research-based principles to a food, agricultural or natural resource issue, situation, and/or problem. Students will be assigned to one of the projects, with about ten students on a team, and will engage in the education, research, and planning of their project. Teams will present their project on the last day with a poster or presentation.

The PGSAS program is free to participants and is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and the state’s Intermediate Units.
