MMI Preparatory School sophomores Gabriella Kupsho and Joshua Kalada-Kania finished in the top three in Penn State Hazleton’s second annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Research Fair competition in the Evelyn Graham Academic Building on the Penn State Hazleton campus.
Gabriella Kupsho, the daughter of Dr. Robert and Diane Kupsho of Drums, captured first place for her “Do bacteria get stressed out, too?” project. Joshua Kalada-Kania, the son of Kevin Kania and Susan Kalada of Drums, placed third for his project, “Aquatic algal filtration.” As the winner, Gabriella Kupsho earned a $1,000 scholarship to Penn State Hazleton.
The competition provides high school students with a venue to present their research and projects and to view projects by peers poised to become the next generation of leaders in STEM fields. In addition to MMI Preparatory School, students from Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences, Jim Thorpe Area High School and Tamaqua Area High School showcased their projects and presented their findings to a panel of judges comprised of Penn State Hazleton faculty and senior engineering students.
