MMI Preparatory School sophomores Desiree Petrick and Elizabeth Eckhart were selected to represent MMI at the 2017 Central Pennsylvania Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar, which will be held May 18-21 at Shippensburg University.

Desiree Petrick is the granddaughter of John Petrick, Freeland and Elizabeth Eckhart is the daughter of Charles and Kim Eckhart, Lehighton.

The four-day HOBY seminar focuses on the theme “Empower. Lead. Excel” while encouraging the young leaders to display responsible citizenship, including community service and volunteerism. Each September, HOBY sophomore registration kits are sent to more than 22,000 public, private, and charter high schools in the United States.

MMI selects two students through an essay-based application process to represent the school at the seminar. Each participating school is encouraged to select student representatives with demonstrated or potential leadership ability who exhibit a variety of traits, including: outstanding oral and/or written communication skills, critical and/or creative thinking, creative problem solving, strong decision-making skills, sensitivity to the needs or concerns of others, charismatic personality, courage to speak out for one’s beliefs, courage to challenge authority, and participation in community service activities.

Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop the global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. The curriculum for this leadership seminar is based on HOBY’s vision to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within the global society.

HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY programs provide students selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning, and motivation-building experiences.
