Four MMI Preparatory School students qualified to compete in the Pennsylvania School Press Association 2016-17 State Journalism Contest during a regional competition at Penn State University’s Berks Campus.
Joshua Narrow, Danielle Pileggi, Julia Snyder and Chava Kornblatt earned the right to travel to Penn State’s University Park campus on March 29, 2017, to vie for the state championship in their respective categories. Danielle Pileggi and Julia Snyder both qualified in the Literary Magazine Art category, Joshua Narrow qualified in the Literary Magazine Poetry category and Chava Kornblatt qualified in the Yearbook Caption Writing category.
In the Literary Magazine Art category at the regional competition, students were given a poem written by a professional poet. After reading the poem, the students had to create a drawing that was relevant to the poem and that would accompany the poem in the literary magazine. For the Literary Magazine Poetry competition, students had to write an original poem for a literary magazine using the theme and length given, as well as title the poem and clearly indicate lines through identification and the use of margins. Students had to exhibit an understanding of poetry, its conventions, punctuation, and potential to create a setting, convey a tone, connect to feelings, and to delve beyond the surface.
In the Yearbook Caption Writing category, students had to write a caption for five pictures that were provided. The captions had to tell a complete story and have a minimum length of two complete sentences.
The mission of the Pennsylvania School Press Association is to promote excellence and responsibility in scholastic journalism through developing students who possess sound journalism skills, demonstrate ethical decision making and recognize, uphold, and advocate First Amendment rights through responsible citizenship and informed media consumption.
