MMI Preparatory School senior Joshua Narrow was recently appointed the Hazleton City Poet Laureate during a meeting held at Hazleton City Hall on March 22. Narrow was selected out a group of creative writing students from schools throughout Greater Hazleton to fill the position.
The Poet Laureate has been recreated to help foster an appreciation for the humanities in the Hazleton area with the hope that students can get involved with various art-based organizations to exhibit their work.
Narrow’s role will be in helping envision this project and get more youth involved for future events. He is a two-time award winner for poetry at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition and qualified twice to compete at the Pennsylvania School Press Association State Journalism competition based on his poetry work. He won a gold for his senior portfolio, which consisted of his poetry, and four silver keys as well as an honorable mention selection in poetry in the 2016-17 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition and won a Silver Key in poetry in the 2015-16 competition. He finished in 1st place for Literary Magazine Poetry in the 2016-17 Pennsylvania School Press Association State Journalism contest and was second in the poetry division in the 2015-16 competition.
Narrow is the son of Howard and Marie Narrow, Hazleton.
