MMI Preparatory School freshman Philip Byriel was selected to the Wyoming Valley Conference Coaches Association Division 3 First team following the 2016-17 varsity basketball season.
The 6-foot-7 post player led the Preppers in scoring and rebounding with an average of 13 points and six boards per game. He also topped MMI in blocks and steals. He posted multiple double-digit scoring games this season, including a career-high 31 points in MMI’s victory over Hanover Area in February.
Byriel was selected MMI’s Athlete of the Month for December of 2016 after recording highs of 22 points against Shenandoah Valley and 18 versus Tunkhannock and eclipsed double figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively, in MMI’s first two wins of the season. In addition to his offensive prowess, he played a pivotal role in the Preppers’ defensive game with his work in the lane and rebounding.
The five-man Coaches Association First team consists of players from schools throughout Division 3 and was announced following a vote of all conference coaches.
