Senior Julia Snyder and junior Bailey Slusser will represent MMI Preparatory School at the state finals of the Pennsylvania School Press Association’s Student Journalism Competition. The state finals will be held on March 27, 2018, at Penn State University’s University Park campus.
Snyder and Slusser tied for first place in the Literary Magazine Artwork category during the regional competition at Penn State’s Berks campus. During the competition, students were given a poem written by a professional poet. After reading the poem, the students were tasked with creating a drawing that was relevant to the poem and would accompany the poem in the literary magazine.
Snyder is the daughter of Dr. Christopher and Dr. Jill Snyder, Sugarloaf. Slusser is the daughter of Atty. Christopher Slusser, Sugarloaf, and Amy St. Pierre, Drums.
The students were judged on their overall interpretation of the poem, whether their piece showed a strong evidence of artistic ability, their success at creating a simple and accurate design to illustrate the context of the copy, their attention to detail to cleverly reflect the piece, their use of color or lack of color to enhance the overall effect, and whether or not the artwork broadened the interpretation of the piece.
In addition to Snyder and Slusser, Alyssa Sweda, Lauren Herman, Mahum Ahmed, Jaclyn Braunstein, Macy Zenier, Christine Park, and Kelisa Hysenbegasi also competed in either the yearbook or literary magazine competitions or attended workshops and seminars that were held in conjunction with the competition. The seminars that the students attended included one conducted by a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter and another on how to take the perfect yearbook photo.
The Pennsylvania School Press Association Student Journalism Competition features education and competitions for every student journalist in Pennsylvania. The event includes writing, design and artistic opportunities similar to those offered at the Journalism Education Association’s semi-annual conventions.
