Mr. Joseph Flanagan is a familiar name around the MMI and the Freeland communities. He has coached at MMMI since 2006, and currently serves as the Athletics Director, Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, and the Middle School Baseball Coach.

Coach Flanagan is a lifetime resident of Freeland and served as the CEO of the Freeland YMCA for 17 years. Most recently, he served as the CEO of the Bloomsburg Area YMCA until taking a full-time role at MMI as the Athletics Director. Flanagan was awarded the Wyoming Valley Coach of the Year twice and named Standard-Speaker Coach of the Year once. He has been awarded the Freeland Borough Key to the City, and named the Hazleton Volunteer Center Volunteer of the Year, the Sons of Erin Citizen of the Year, and the American Legion Citizen of the Year. In 2024 he received the 2024 Richard M. Saullo, Jr. Service to Community Award at the 95th Anniversary Celebration of the Greater Hazleton United Way.

In 2024, Coach Flanagan led the Preppers to the PIAA 1A Boys’ Basketball State Championships for just the fourth time in school history and the first time since the 2009-10 season. The team’s previous State appearances included the 2008-09 season and their historic 1973 State Title win, the first year that private schools were allowed to participate in postseason play. Coach Flanagan has now led MMI to the State Tournament three times during his time at the helm of the program.

When he is not working or coaching, Coach Flanagan enjoys traveling, sports of all kinds especially Notre Dame Football, college basketball, and American history.
