Middle School Instructor

Bachelor of Science in Marine Science and Biology, Kutztown University

Mrs. Laurie Mele began working at MMI in 2016 when she became the Preppers Cheerleading Coach and an assistant soccer coach at the middle school level. Her tenure at MMI has evolved and expanded over the years moving from a long-term substitute in the English Department to her current position as a full-time middle school instructor teaching English, Art, Workshop, and assisting the junior class in their SAT/ACT Test Prep class. She continues to also lead the Cheerleading squad as she has for the past eight years.

Mrs. Mele has a deep passion for reading and writing, and loves teaching middle school, where she fosters an environment that prioritizes students’ social and emotional well-being alongside their cognitive development. Mrs. Mele insists on a classroom atmosphere that emphasizes positive interactions and constructive criticism. As a certified art therapy technician, she integrates therapeutic art practices into her teaching, enriching the classroom experience. With a background as a professional cake decorator, she brings unique artistic skills to her teaching.

Mrs. Mele lives in Jim Thorpe with her husband, Michael, who is also a member of the MMI Faculty. They have three children, Gavrielle, Kai, and Keiran. Kai Mele is a member of MMI’s Class of 2020 and serves occasionally as a substitute teacher. Mrs. Mele is also mom to Hermione, MMI’s favorite bearded dragon, who spends time at school in her classroom in Old Main.
