Wall of Fame Class of 2023

After nearly 50 years of teaching math at MMI,
Mr. Anthony Cusat retired in the spring of 2021.

Anthony earned a Bachelor’s degree in
Mathematics from King’s College. He began
teaching at MMI on September 1, 1972 and, at the
time of his retirement, was MMI’s longest-tenured
faculty member. In addition to teaching math, Anthony also served as the
Dean of Students for 19 years from 1987-2006.

Not only did he share his knowledge and insight into mathematics with
multiple generations of MMI students, he was also involved as an advisor or
coach for numerous extracurricular activities and sports teams. He was the
advisor for various classes, as well as the Science Countdown team,
Scholarship Bowl, Board Games Club, Hiking Club, Computer Science and
Electronics Club, and Student Council.

Additionally, Anthony was the head coach of MMI’s varsity boys’ basketball
team for 13 years (1990-2004) and was named Schuylkill League Coach of
the Year during the 1989-1990 season. He was at the helm when the team
played its first game in MMI’s current gymnasium on December 8, 2000, a
50-40 win over Faith Christian School.

In addition to his work with the boys’ basketball team, Anthony was also
instrumental in establishing the girls’ basketball program at MMI. He
coached the inaugural season of girls’ basketball in 1990-1991, with the
team playing at the mid-school level. He later turned coaching at MMI into a
family affair when he served as an assistant coach of the girls’ basketball
team under his wife, Elaine Cusat. He didn’t stop at coaching basketball.
Cusat also coached cross-country and baseball and was the advisor for the
Cross Country Club.

Over the years, many lives have been touched by Anthony Cusat’s
teaching, coaching, and advising, including his own sons who all graduated
from MMI: Anthony ’92, Grant ’95, Michael ’99, and Marc ’03. While some
may find his retirement the end of an era, it is just the beginning of a
lifetime of sharing stories and heartfelt gratitude for all he has done for the
school and his students.
