Dr. Cory Coll ’60 spent his career in the field of nuclear weapons. He earned a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics, then spent three years of post-doctoral study and teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. Later, Dr. Coll joined the weapons program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as a design physicist and participated in three underground tests at the Nevada Test Site. While employed at LLNL, he took a two-and-a-half year assignment at the Pentagon as a special assistant in the Strategic Defense Systems Office and later at the Defense Advances Research Projects Agency as a program manager in the Directed Energy Office. In the latter role, he initiated an innovative technologies program and managed a program for space object imaging. After Dr. Coll returned to LLNL, he served as the deputy program manager in the Laser Program, evaluating military applications for solid-state lasers, and worked in the laboratory director’s office. He left LLNL to work in the Office of the President of the University of California system and was responsible for collaborations between the UC campuses and the three national laboratories, including LLNL, which were administered by the university. After spending the final two years of his career at Livermore as the University of California representative, he retired in 2010.
