Dr. Walter W. Tunnessen ’57, a general pediatrician with a specialty in pediatric dermatology, was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the State University of New York Health Sciences Center and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As Vice President of the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Tunnessen greatly influenced the direction of pediatric training in the United States and Canada. He served on numerous national committees whose primary goal is to improve the health care for America’s children. Dr. Tunnessen lectured at numerous educational conferences and authored several articles, clinical research papers, chapters in numerous pediatric textbooks and his book Signs and Symptoms in Pediatrics. He has received some of the highest awards in pediatric medicine as well as having numerous awards named in his memory as several prestigious institutions.
