MMI Preparatory School senior Andrew Alday, the son of Dr. Senen Alday and Dr. Milagros Azcueta-Alday of Mountaintop, was selected as one of only ten University of Pittsburgh 2016 Nordenberg Leadership Scholars. Alday has accepted a full-tuition scholarship to attend the University of Pittsburgh and will study philosophy as a pre-law track.

In addition to his academic course work in philosophy, Alday will participate in a series of outside-the-classroom experiences designed to enhance personal and professional growth, including training sessions on a variety of topics, leadership opportunities, service activities, one-on-one career and personal coaching and experiential learning in internship and volunteer settings. These activities will be laid out in a progressive and structured manner during each of the four years of his undergraduate career.

The Nordenberg Leadership Scholarship program was established in 2015 to reward the best and brightest student leaders from high schools in Pennsylvania who have demonstrated excellent leadership skills, innovative thinking, intellectual curiosity and community involvement. The program, which is named in honor of University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Emeritus Mark A. Nordenberg, provides intellectually gifted and highly motivated student leaders with exceptional opportunities for continued academic achievement, leadership development, civic engagement and professional experiences with organizations and corporations in the Pittsburgh region.

The scholarship recipients were selected by a University committee, led by Sarah Popovich, program manager for the Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development, and Cheryl Finlay, interim associate dean and director of the Office of Career Development and Placement Assistance.

Kenyon Bonner, University of Pittsburgh vice provost and dean of students, said, “The program is unique because it incorporates rigorous academic engagement with an ambitious and structured curriculum outside the classroom that is designed to challenge the scholars to excel in leadership, global awareness, citizenship, and civic engagement. It exemplifies the University’s strong commitment to partnering with local employers to provide Pitt students with exceptional experiential learning opportunities to enrich their academic endeavors and increase their competitiveness upon graduation.”
