Borealis Wind Quintet, one of America’s preeminent chamber ensembles, performed Thursday for MMI Preparatory School students as part of the community outreach program of the Greater Hazleton Concert Series.

Amelia Bergeron, Greater Hazleton Concert Series director, opened the program by speaking to the students about the Greater Hazleton Concert Series and the Borealis Wind Quintet. The chamber ensemble’s visit to MMI follows their performance Wednesday night as the Greater Hazleton Concert Series celebrates its 80th anniversary.

The highest musical integrity, irresistible energy, and five-fold charisma distinguish the Grammy Award-nominated Borealis in the chamber music field. Audiences love their exquisite programming that includes the finest of the classics, engaging commissioned works, opera arias, and works for piano and winds.

MMI Head of School Thomas G. Hood said, “We’re honored to welcome such an accomplished chamber ensemble to MMI Preparatory School. Bringing these types of performances to our students provides an appreciation for music and for arts education.”

The Washington Post praised the Borealis Wind Quintet’s “sensitive collaborations that have a sophisticated and cosmopolitan air.” Peter G. Davies of the New York Times described one concert as “a polished, elegantly turned performance…each work received lively, expert treatment by this skilled and exceptionally talented chamber group.” Joseph Horowitz, also of the New York Times, describes “lively communicative readings…the performance was a scintillating one.” The Philadelphia Inquirer writes, “They demonstrated the sort of rapport that characterizes the very best chamber playing.”
