MMI Preparatory School rising sophomore Jessica McClellan, the daughter of Bruce and Patricia McClellan of Freeland, scored a 94 to capture the Girls 9-10 grade division of the Wyoming Valley Country Club Invitational at the Wyoming Valley Country Club in Wilkes-Barre. McClellan defeated five other golfers in her first year competing in the annual event. The tournament has four divisions for boys and girls in grades 9-10 and 11-12.
“This was the most fun I have ever had competing in a tournament and I will continue to compete in it for the next three years,” she said.
McClellan was a starter for MMI’s co-ed golf team as a freshman during the 2015 season. She is competing on the Philadelphia Jr. PGA Tour and placed second in every event she entered this year. Over the past three seasons, McClellan has won numerous medals competing in the Anthracite Golf Association Junior Tour. She is coached by her uncle, Brian Patrick who is a 1986 graduate of MMI and is the PGA Professional at Split Rock Resort. McClellan also plays in the junior league at the Sugarloaf Golf Club.
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour conducts more than 90 events seasonally at top facilities, featuring competitive, one-day, 18-hole and nine-hole events for boys and girls ages 8-18. The Anthracite Golf Association conducts Junior Golf tournaments for boys and girls ages 10-18 who live in one of nearly 20 counties across Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Northern Tier.
