MMI junior Angelica Alday, the daughter of Dr. Senen Alday and Milagros Azcueta Alday of Mountaintop, was one of just 30 girls selected to participate in the Center For Women in Technology’s (CWIT) Bits and Bytes Program, which was held Feb. 19 and 20 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), an honors university in Maryland.
The Bits & Bytes Program is for high school junior girls interested in finding out more about the fields of engineering and information technology. Alday was among a group of students who finished second in the Engineering Design competition. Students were required to work in teams to invent something to solve a problem. Each teams’ designs were evaluated by a group of judges, including a UMBC faculty member, industry professional and a current CWIT or Cyber Scholar in the field. Teams were chosen for awards based on their design, technical and creative achievement, and cost efficiency.
In addition to the competition, students were able to interact with college students and faculty members during the two-day event and received general advice on being a strong STEM college applicant. The free program supports CWIT’s mission to encourage and support women to be leaders in information technology and engineering fields.
