MMI Preparatory School swept the top five positions and had an additional team finish seventh during the regional Envirothon competition. The winning team of Lauren Babinetz, Alexander Sessock, Kaitlyn McGeehan, Grant Warren, and Dominique Kline scored a total of 407 points during the event and will advance to the state championships on May 22-23 at Susquehanna University and Camp Mount Luther, where they will represent MMI and Luzerne County.
The team of Joshua Kalada-Kania, Kai Mele, Amanda Kalada-Kania, Louis DeAngelo, and Elias Buchman finished second with 382 points. Daniel DeMelfi, Violet O’Connell, Benjamin Putnam, Mahum Ahmed, and Hunter Blasko came in third with 331points. Alexander Jordan, Darren Zheng, Christopher Yanuzzi, and Natalie Graham were fourth with 289 points. Elise Hrea, Katherine Lewandowski, Peter Walko, Wesley Guarneri, and Hannah Falatko came in fifth with 264 points. Kelisa Hysenbegasi, Joshua Galbiati, Jordan Kulsa, Juliana Salio, and Summer Evancho finished seventh with 251 points.
Michael Mele, MMI science instructor and Envirothon advisor, said, “I am very proud of the hard work and dedication these students showed both in preparation for the Envirothon and during the competition. They
have dedicated numerous hours after class studying with me on everything from Jefferson salamanders to Wooly Adelgids. Their performances are a testament to everything we do at MMI to foster strong learners.”
