MMI Preparatory School held an induction ceremony recently for 21 new members of the Science National Honor Society and 16 new members of the Mathematics National Honor Society.
During the ceremony, Assistant Head of School Charles Seidel welcomed guests and faculty member Michael Mele introduced the officers of the two honor societies. Jay Solgama, president of MMI’s chapters of the Science National Honor Society and Mathematics National Honor Society, gave a speech. MMI Head of School Thomas G. Hood gave closing remarks and Luke Yamulla provided piano accompaniment.
Solgama and faculty member Susan Moyer presented certificates to the new inductees of the Mathematics National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta. The purpose of the society is to inspire a keen interest in mathematics, develop strong scholarship in the subject and promote the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. To be inducted, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 90 in mathematics and 83 overall. They must have studied two years of high school mathematics, including Algebra I or II and Geometry. The honor society has more than 108,000 student members in more than 2,200 schools.

Solgama and Mele presented certificates to the new inductees of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS). The purpose of the society is to encourage participation in and recognition of scientific and intellectual thought, to advance the students’ knowledge of classical and modern science, to communicate with the scientific community, to aid the civic community with its comprehension of science and to encourage students to participate in community service to foster a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind. There are 1,055 chapters of the SNHS in 45 states in addition to Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and several American schools around the world. Membership in the SNHS is conferred during the last two years of secondary school education. A student must be in the 11th or 12th grade and have an average of 90 in all science classes, must be enrolled in at least one honors or upper-level science course during or prior to 11th grade, must be enrolled in at least one second-year honors or upper-level science course during or prior to 12th grade.
