Lisa M. Ferry receives Women’s Empowerment Grant

MMI Preparatory School art and anthropology instructor Lisa M. Ferry was one of only eight women who received the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s Empowerment Grant during the Chamber’s 2015 Business and Community Awards ceremony.

Ferry was also awarded a certificate of special congressional recognition from Congressman Lou Barletta in honor of her achievement.

The Women’s Empowerment Grant was established to encourage women to pursue training or education that will help them start or advance their career. Ferry is currently pursing her Master of Art Education with Emphasis in Special Populations from Moore College of Art and Design. 

Ferry’s experience includes teaching photography and advanced photography at Misericordia University for three years. She has been a photographer for 20 years and traveled to Mexico on a full stipend for a photo ethnography assignment. Ferry has had her work shown at her own exhibitions and has had three pieces of artwork selected for the juried Northeastern Biennial Twenty Thirteen and Twenty Fifteen. She was also a published finalist for two consecutive years in Photographer’s Forum magazine.

“We encourage our instructors to continually strive toward excellence, both personally and in the classroom. We congratulate Ms. Ferry on this award and support her in the pursuit of her master’s degree,” said MMI Head of School Thomas G. Hood.

Ferry is a member of the Special Needs in Art Education Group (SNAE) and the Independent School Art Education Group (ISAE) and was elected Pennsylvania Art Educators Association Region 9 board member. She is also a consulting team member for special education at the Barnes Foundation. 

Additionally, she is a member of the Hazleton Art League, the National Writing Project, the National Art Education Association, Lambda Alpha Anthropology Society, American Anthropological Association and Society of Visual Anthropology; a facilitator for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council; a College Board Advanced Placement Reader for Studio Art, and the First Night Art Walk coordinator.
