MMI senior Frederick Mejia placed first in the individual competition and joined classmates Brian Payne, Zachary Young, Alexander Sessock, Daniel DeMelfi, Wesley Guarneri, Alexander Kline and Coleman Smith to capture the top prize in the team event at the 71st annual Luzerne County Council of Teachers of Mathematics (LCCTM) contest, which was held recently at Wilkes University.
Frederick Mejia, the son of Carlos and Esperanza Mejia of West Hazleton, won a full scholarship to Wilkes University that may be used for any degree or program. Zachary Young, the son of Christian and Nicole Young of Freeland, placed third in the senior division and won a cash prize.
Brian Payne is the son of Brian Payne of Sugarloaf and the late Marie Payne, Alexander Sessock is the son of Jennifer and James Denion of Freeland and the late John Sessock, Daniel DeMelfi is the son of Daniel and Esme DeMelfi of Hazleton, Wesley Guarneri is the son of Vincent and Sop Guarneri of Wilkes-Barre, Alexander Kline is the son of Dr. Gerard and Cathy Kline of Mountaintop, and Coleman Smith is the son of Keith and Laura Smith of White Haven.
Approximately 150 students from 10 schools throughout Luzerne County, as well as the Tunkhannock Area School District, participated in the event. Each student must be nominated to compete by their high school’s mathematics department.
The contest is held in conjunction with Wilkes University and features individual and team competitions in senior and junior divisions. The first-place individuals in both divisions each won a full scholarship to Wilkes University.
