Jennifer Novotney, a teacher at MMI Preparatory School, has received an award for her recently published novel.
Her first novel, Winter in the Soul, won a bronze 2014 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in the young adult category. The contest judges the work of authors, illustrators and publishers of children’s books distributed in North America.
The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are designed to honor the year’s best children’s books, authors and illustrators. The awards celebrate youthful curiosity and discovery through books and reading. The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards aim to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and lifelong reading. The Moonbeam Awards recognize and reward the best of these books, bringing them to the attention of booksellers, librarians, parents and children. The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are presented by publishing services company Jenkins Group, Inc., of Traverse City, Michigan.
Winter in the Soul, published this summer by Anaiah Press, is a young adult fantasy novel. In a world divided by power and greed, 17-year-old Lilika harbors an intense desire to return to Winter in the Soul, the place her family left to escape the darkness that was manifesting from a coldness of the soul. When she meets Talon, their connection is evident right from the start. Together they travel through the Black Kingdom to recover Lilika’s stolen locket and in search of an answer to the mystery behind Winter in the Soul. Lilika holds the key to stopping the darkness from spreading. The fate of their world lies in her hands. Will she stop the Black Kingdom before its darkness overtakes them all, or will they succumb to the darkness that is spreading across the land?
