A team of four MMI Preparatory School students placed fourth in the annual Bloomsburg University Math Contest.
The team of Connor Spencer, Rachael Betz, Jessica Zheng and Morgan Strecker placed fourth in in Brain Teasers and the Game of 24 points. Connor Spencer is the son of Christina and Christopher Spencer, Mountain Top; Rachael Betz is the daughter of Dr. Amy Houm, Tamaqua and Richard Betz, Honesdale; Jessica Zheng is the daughter of De and Hongzhi Zheng, Jim Thorpe; and Morgan Strecker is the daughter of Peter and Tara Strecker, Mountain Top. Mr. Gerald Pierotti serves as the advisor for the program.
Along with the Math Club, students and faculty from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics coordinate and run the all-day contest. The three competitions vary in difficulty and work off a foundation of geometry, trigonometry, algebra, logic and statistics.
The Bloomsburg University Math Contest has tripled in size over the past 16 years, peaking last year with more than 300 students representing 24 high schools from across Northeast Pennsylvania.
