MMI Preparatory School junior Zachary Young, the son of Christian and Nicole Young of Freeland, will receive recognition in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program after finishing as one of the top 50,000 entrants in the country on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
MMI Head of School D. Scott Wiggins commended Young for qualifying for the national scholarship program. “On behalf of everyone at MMI, I’d like to congratulate Zachary for his performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. MMI has consistently placed at least one student in contention for a National Merit Scholarship every year for many years. We are honored to have our students receive national recognition as some of the best and brightest students across the country and certainly feel it speaks to the exceptional education they receive at MMI.”
Approximately 1.6 million high school students across the country took the qualifying exam. From the 50,000 high scorers nationwide, about 16,000 will be named National Merit Program Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state. The remaining 34,000 students will be named Commended Students for their performance on the qualifying exam. Semifinalists will move on to compete for one of 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards that will be offered in 2019. The list of Semifinalists and Commended Students will be announced in September.
